MADRID, Nov 23 (SW) - Real Madrid take the first position
in Spain with the help of Zinedine Zidane, who scored the decisive goal in
the final phase of the match against Albacete. Valencia were held to a draw
by Real Murcia.
Valencia once again failed to use the opportunity to go back on top in the
Spanish Liga. Rafa Benitez and his men were held to a 2-2 draw in and
against Murcia. The 'Bats' did take the lead through Mista in the 12th
minute but Richi made it 1-1 in minute 38. Michel even gave Murcia the lead
in the 48th minute but it was again Mista who scored, in the 53rd minute, to
give his club one point.
Earlier Real Madrid took the full three points in the final phase of the
match against Albacete. David Beckham had opened the score after 38 minutes
but the visitors had a perfect reaction, with Parri equalizing one minute
later. Frenchman Zinedine Zidane however scored the decisive goal for the
2-1 victory in the 81st minute.
Celta de Vigo, who are playing in this season's Champions League, suffered a
home defeat by Athletic de Bilbao. Jose Maria Lacruz scored the 0-1 in the
58th minute and Igor Iraola made it 0-2 in stoppage time.
In Barcelona, the second club of that city, Espanyol had a narrow 1-0 win
against Sevilla in a match where the referee gave Sevilla four yellow cards
and Espanyol six, of which two went to Alberto Lopo, who had to leave the
pitch. Cyril Domoraud became the hero of the match in the last minute by
scoring the 1-0 for Espanyol.
Malaga and Osasuna had to settle for a scoreless draw in the south of Spain.
Francisco Punal for Malaga and Fernando Sanz for Osasuna were booked by the
Zaragoza, who returned to the Primera Division this summer, had to come from
behind to take away the win in Santander against Racing. The home team
scored after 40 minutes with the help of Zaragoza player Miguel Rebosio who
scored an own goal. The first half will be a bad memory for the player who
was also booked in the opening phase. However in the last minute of that
half, Rubio Alvaro equalized for Zaragoza and former Valencianista Soriano
gave the visitors the win by scoring in minute 85.
Real Valladolid had a home win against Atletico de Madrid. The second club
from the capital did take the lead in the 13th minute through Kiki Musampa
but Makukula cancelled out that goal eight minutes later. Victor Zapata
scored the 2-1 for Valladolid after 31 minutes and Atletico had to play the
second half with ten players as Ortiz received his second yellow card in the
last minute of the first half. Sousa took advantage of the situation by
scoring the last goal of the match, 3-1 in the 65th minute.
On Saturday, Deportivo la Coruña had to accept a draw in Sevilla against
Betis. The home team got a chance to take the lead after 28 minutes but
Fernando failed to convert the penalty. The current league leaders from
Galicia would have gone down even two positions if Valencia had won against
Frank Rijkaard's FC Barcelona had to suffer yet another defeat. The Catalans
were beaten by Villareal who are going through a good period. Jose Mari
scored the 1-0 for Villareal in the 39th minute and Kluivert did what he
could not do for Holland, by scoring the equalizer in minute 71. The
decisive goal was scored by Sonny Anderson, former Barcelona striker, in
stoppage time to give Villareal three points.
Samuel Eto'o showed his value in the away match against last season's
runners-up Real Sociedad by scoring the only goal of the match in the 17th
minute, to leave San Sebastian with an important victory, as the club has
had a difficult start this season.
