BARCELONA, Mar 17
(SW) - Zaragoza have won the Copa del Rey after beating
Real Madrid 2-3 in extra time. The winning goal came
from Luciano Galletti with a perfect strike past Madrid
The score was opened by the English superstar David
Beckham in the 23rd minute with a free kick from thirty
meters. The ball hit the inside of the right post after
crossing the line of goalkeeper Laínez.
It only took Zaragoza five minutes to equalize however:
Savio crossed the ball from the left wing and when
Solari failed to clear, Dani took advantage and scored
the 1-1 for the underdogs.
Zaragoza even took the lead just before half time, when
Guti brought down Villa in the area. Villa took the
spotkick himself and converted it for 1-2.
However, the Brazilian player Roberto Carlos equalized
again just two minutes into the second half. He as well
scored from a thirty meter free kick, which hit the
right corner of the goal, leaving goalie Laínez without
In the 67th minute, things started looking bad for
Zaragoza when Cani was sent off with a second yellow
card, but just before the end of regular time, Guti, who
had already caused the penalty, was sent off as well to
give both teams equal chances in extra time.
The extra time was exciting and both teams could have
decided the match in their favour but it was Luciano
Galletti of Zaragoza to actually do so when he struck,
for the ball to sail past César to win the Copa del Rey
2004. Madrid scored once more but that goal was
cancelled after the linesman had spotted offside.
Zaragoza won their last Copa del Rey in 2001 when they
defeated Celta de Vigo 3-1.
