TRUJILLO, Peru (AP) -- Venezuela was eliminated
from the Copa America after tying Bolivia 1-1 Monday.
The tie advanced Peru, Uruguay and Mexico to the
quarterfinals, and left Bolivia with a slim chance to move on. If Chile and
Costa Rica also have a low-scoring tie on Wednesday, Bolivia could make it as
one of the two best third-place teams.
Later Monday, Peru and Colombia tied 2-2, but
both had already wrapped up spots in the quarterfinals.
Nolberto Solano scored in the 58th minute and
Flavio Maestri followed with a tying goal two minutes later to bring host Peru
back from a two-goal deficit.
Edwin Congo and Abel Aguilar scored for Colombia,
the defending champion.
In the early game, Venezuela's Ruberth Moran
scored in the 27th minute when midfielder Ricardo Paez's shot was parried by
goalkeeper Leo Fernandez straight to him.
Six minutes later, Joaquin Botero trapped a lob
in the box and set up Gonzalo Galindo, whose shot went between the legs of
defender Andree Gonzales and past goalkeeper Gilberto Angelucci.
Venezuela hasn't won a Copa game since beating
Bolivia in 1967. |
