PIURA, Peru (AP) -- Adolfo Bautista scored and drew
a penalty to help Mexico eliminate Ecuador from the Copa America with a 2-1 win
Tuesday.
Mexico, which had already advanced to the
quarterfinals, will play Brazil or Paraguay. Argentina beat Uruguay 4-2 in the
late game, but both teams had clinched spots in the next round before the game.
Bautista was tripped by Ecuador goalkeeper
Jacinto Espinoza and drew a penalty that Hector Altamarino converted with a shot
off the left post in the 27th minute.
Bautista sent a 20-yard shot past Espinoza in
the 42nd. A few minutes later in injury time, he was yellow-carded for a
reckless kick that forced Espinoza out with an injured hand. The goalkeeper was
replaced by Damian Lanza.
Agustin Delgado scored for Ecuador in the 71st
minute when he took a short cross from substitute Franklin Salas and headed it
in between two defenders.
In the late game, Luciano Figueroa scored for
Argentina in the 20th and 89th minutes. Cristian Gonzalez and Roberto Ayala
added the other goals.
Fabian Estoyanoff and Vicente Sanchez scored for
Uruguay.
Uruguay was reduced to 10 men in the 35th after
Joe Bizera was sent off for pushing the referee, his second yellow card of the
night. |
