With Barcelona winning on Saturday, it was
down to Real Madrid, who travelled to face Getafe, to keep up the
pressure on the Catalan team at the top of La Liga. Getafe had other
ideas, though, as they ran out 2-1 winners in the shock of the weekend.
Goals from Albiol and Riki saw off Los Galacticos, despite a late goal
from Santiago Solari. That now means 3 defeats in the last 5 games for
Real, a record that will not be popular with the fans in Madrid.
Osasuna travelled to Levante, hoping to bounce back from last weekends
defeat by Barcelona. It wasn’t to be their night, as Levante took
control of the game straight away and went 1-0 up in the first 6 minutes
with a goal from Juanma. He then made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, and
Vladimir Manchev added a third on the half hour mark. Garcia Sergio saw
off the visitors with Levante’s fourth goal of the night and made it a
comfortable 4-0 win for the home side.
Racing Santander have been inconsistent of late, and were hoping to
secure a valuable home win over fellow league strugglers Mallorca. It
didn’t take long for them to score, as Anderson Silva had the ball in
the back of the net in the first minute. David Aganzo made it 2-0 in the
4th minute, making it look like there was to be a goal-fest at the
Estadio el Sardinero. This wasn’t to be, as Benayoun scored the final
goal of the game in the 51st minute, ensuring Santander went away after
the game with all 3 points.
Villarreal continued their striking form, with a 4-1 defeat of Espanyol.
Diego Forlan opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the campaign in
the 25th minute. Albert Lopo equalised for the visitors, giving them a
light of hope, but it was not to be as the home side then went on to
score another 3 goals through Sorin, Riquelme (pen) and Figueroa.
Despite getting beaten 1-0 away from home, Valencia still sit a place
above Atletico Madrid. Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the game
to give the home side all 3 points in a battle for European
In other games in La Liga on Sunday, Albacete played host to Deportivo
La Coruсa, who managed to grab only goal of the game, allowing Fabricio
Collocini scoring his first league goal for Depor to win 1-0. Real
Zaragoza travelled to Sevilla and ran out 1-0 winners with a goal by
Gabriel Milito, and a late goal by Jose Barkero gave Real Sociedad the
points at home to Numancia. Sociedad went 1-0 in the 7th minute through
Kovacevic, but Tevenet equalised for Numancia early in the second half.
The defeat of Real Madrid by Getafe now means that Barcelona have opened
up an 11 point lead at the top of La Liga, and 7 points separate 2nd and
3rd places. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Osasuna, lying in
17th place, are 7 points clear of the relegation spaces, which are
occupied by Numancia, Albacete and Mallorca.
