Real Madrid beat Barcelona in Clasico

  
Real Madrid have won the 'Clasico' against FC Barcelona, beating their Catalan arch rivals 4-2, with goals from Zidane, Ronaldo, Raъl and Owen.

It was a hectic opening phase at Santiago Bernabeu stadium. After two minutes, Madrid had a chance to open the score but the Barcelona defense managed to clear. Forward Raъl was seen handling the ball, but the referee missed it. A minute later, Raъl clashed heads with Puyol in midfield, and needed treatment for a head wound.

In the seventh minute, poor defending from Van Bronckhorst, enabled Ronaldo to conquer the ball on the right wing, and send a cross towards the far post, where French midfielder Zinedine Zidane headed home for the opening goal. The player could not celebrate as he hit the post with his head, and became the second Madrid player to be treated by the medics.

FC Barcelona immediately put more pressure on their opponents. Samuel Eto'o and Rafael Marquez were close to equalizing but both failed.

Impressive work from Ronaldo, close to Barcelona's penalty area, found Roberto Carlos who had the space to shoot, but chose to cross towards Owen. The Brazilian's pass was intercepted however, and the following corner was headed well wide.

In the 20th minute, Ronaldo scored his first home goal in 82 days. A free kick from David Beckham on the right wing, following a foul from Marquez, found the Brazilian, who headed home for an early 2-0 lead.

But nine minutes later, Barcelona got one back as Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o found his way through three Real Madrid defenders before putting the ball past goalkeeper Casillas.

In the following minutes, Eto'o had two more chances to equalize but was unable to score a second in such a short amount of time. Madrid had an opportunity as well, but a pass from the left wing was neutralized by Van Bronckhorst, avoiding a good chance for Michael Owen.

Not long before the break, Van Bronckhorst was close to equalizing but his attempt from close range was deflected by a defender, after which the ball rolled past the right post.

Against all odds, it was Real Madrid to score another goal for a 3-1 lead, still in the first half. Roberto Carlos stormed down the left wing and passed at Raъl, who found space between Victor Valdes' legs to score the third goal.

In the second half, Barcelona continued to attack, and a pass from David Beckham found his fellow countryman Michael Owen, who scored for the fourth goal of the night, which seemed to have decided the clash.

Ronaldinho got one back with a perfectly performed free kick in the 73rd minute, and attempted to inspire the Catalan side. This inspiration did not last long however as Eto'o had to be replaced in the 75th minute due to a knee injury.

In the remainder of the match, both teams tried to attack but it wasn't until the 89th minute that David Beckham was very close to scoring a fifth goal. His distance strike however, went just past the left post, leaving the final score at 4-2.

The gap between the two teams is now reduced to six points, with FC Barcelona still in first position, at 69 points from 30 games.
