Both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid won their
matches on Sunday, against Getafe and Levante respectively, while the
battle between Villarreal and Betis Sevilla ended with a scoreless draw.
On the half hour mark, FC Barcelona's Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho put
the Catalans ahead against Getafe. In the 56th minute, the French winger
Ludovic Giuly added a second to decide things at Camp Nou, 2-0.
In Valencia, Real Madrid defeated home team Levante 0-2. Both goals were
scored by Ronaldo, who netted in the 37th and 83rd minutes.
Following their midweek UEFA Cup elimination by AZ Alkmaar, Villarreal
were unable to recover against Real Betis. At El Madrigal stadium,
neither side managed to score, but the referee did have to book nine
players, of which five played in Betis' colours.
The clash between Racing de Santander and Athletic de Bilbao could not
have been decided any later. The Basque visitors were given a penalty in
the 90th minute, which was converted by Orbaiz, and Tiko took advantage
of Santander's shock condition by scoring a quick second goal for 0-2.
Another scoreless draw was the result of the match between Real Mallorca
and reigning champions Valencia CF. The draw helps neither side, as the
Valencians are deeply involved in a battle for Champions League spots,
while Mallorca are fighting against relegation, which seems to have
become a lost case.
The most convincing win of the day was achieved by Real Zaragoza, at
home against last-placed Numancia, 4-1. Villa's first goal in the 63rd
minute was cancelled out by an own goal from Cani just three minutes
later, but after another three minutes, Villa scored a second to restore
the lead. Ponzio and Savio did their share as well, scoring additional
goals in the 78th and 81st minutes respectively.
Malaga ended their match at Albacete with a 1-2 victory, with goals from
Duda and Amoroso (penalty). Pacheco took care of the only goal for the
Barcelona continue to lead, with 72 points from 32 games, and Real
Madrid follow at 66 points. Villarreal, who have a game in hand, are
still best of the rest with 52 points, ahead of Sevilla on goal
