Injured starters Cafu and Roque Junior
will miss Brazil's friendly with Russia on March 1, the team's only scheduled
warmup for the World Cup in Germany.
Manager Carlos Alberto Parreira left the two off the
list of 22 players he announced on Tuesday for the match at Lokomotiv Stadium in
Except for the absence of the veteran pair, the list was considered a reflection
of the team Parreira plans to take to Germany in quest of an unprecedented sixth
World Cup title.
"It's not time for experiments. We'll field the team we've been using," Parreira
told Pele's Web site. "I'd like to have more games, but I shouldn't complain."
The team's strong suit is its attack, with a gallery of superstars vying for a
starting berth: Real Madrid stars Ronaldo and Robinho, Inter Milan's Adriano and
FC Barcelona's Ronaldinho - named by FIFA as the world's best player in 2005 and
Only two members of the squad play in Brazil: Ricardinho and Gustavo Nery, both
of national champion Corinthians. The remaining 20 play for European clubs.
AC Milan's Cafu, the Brazil captain and a veteran of the past three World Cup
finals, will likely be replaced by Real Madrid's Cicinho. Many Brazilians think
Cicinho deserves the starting slot, but Parreira relies on the experience of
Roque Junior of Germany's Bayer Leverkusen, another veteran of Brazil's 2002
World Cup champion, is also virtually assured a berth at this year's tournament.
Parreira will choose his replacement among Cris of France's Lyon, Juan of Bayer
Leverkusen, Lucio of Bayern Munich, and Luisao of Portugal's Benfica.
Two newcomers appeared to have won a spot on the World Cup team. Corinthians
wingback Gustavo Nery is the backup for Real Madrid veteran Roberto Carlos, and
Lyon striker Fred was Parreira's pick for the berth of injured Ricardo Oliveira,
of Spain's Real Betis.
