Ronaldo's 12th goal of the season
and his second in four days helped Real Madrid to crush Deportivo La Coruna 4-0
and move into second place in the Spanish Primera Liga.
Real's cause was helped
by Valencia's 1-0 defeat at Sevilla, following Osasuna's surprise 1-0
setback at Bilbao on Saturday.
Real are now 11 points adrift of leaders Barcelona, with Osasuna two
points further back on 55 and Valencia on 53.
Real went ahead in the ninth minute when Depor defender Hector turned a
David Beckham free-kick into his own net from the edge of the six-yard
Ronaldo proved that he is recovering some of his best form by following
his midweek goal with a 36th minute effort from close range from a
Roberto Carlos pass.
Spain international defender Sergio Ramos headed the third from another
Beckham free-kick after 69 minutes and Julio Baptista took over the
setpiece duties to good effect when he curled a rasping free-kick around
the Depor wall eight minutes from time.
Jordi Lopez put Sevilla in the hunt for a Champions League place by
scoring an injury-time header to sink Valencia.
The midfielder had scooped a penalty against the bar in the 76th minute
after Roberto Ayala had brought down Argentine compatriot Javier Saviola
and was sent off for the challenge.
Fifth-placed Sevilla climbed to within two points of Valencia, who
occupy the final Champions League spot.
