Ronaldo and Adriano netted a pair
each and Brazil easily defeated FC Lucerne 8-0 in a World Cup warmup on
Tuesday.
It was Brazil's second-to-last match before
heading to Germany to defend its World Cup title. It will face New
Zealand on Sunday in Geneva.
Midfielder Kaka put Brazil ahead in the 19th minute with a low cross
shot from inside the area, and Adriano goaled in the 37th with a header
after a cross from Kaka.
Ronaldo scored his first goal in the 42nd with a low left-footer from
about 12 meters (yards), and added his second in the 58th, hitting an
open net after FC Lucerne's defense gave the ball away inside the area.
Defender Lucio scored in the 60th from close range after a perfect
through ball from midfielder Emerson, and Juninho added another on a
free kick in the 70th.
Robinho scored his goal in the 77th with a powerful right-footer from
just outside the area, and Adriano closed the scoring in the 85th from
near the penalty spot before nearly 30,000 fans at packed St. Jakob-Park.
Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira used his World Cup starters -
including the "magic quartet" of Kaka, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Ronaldo -
for most of the match. Only in the 66th minute did he began making
substitutions - six in total.
FC Lucerne, which barely threatened, has just returned to Switzerland's
first division. It gained promotion after winning the second-flight
title this year.
Parreira said earlier in the week that Brazil was not at a disadvantage
by facing weaker opponents during its World Cup preparation. He said his
main goal was to gradually develop the squad and allow time for its
players to rest from the grueling European season.
Last Sunday in training, Brazil defeated Fluminense's Under-20 squad
13-1 in the lakeside resort town of Weggis, where it is preparing for
the World Cup.
The match against Lucerne was Brazil's first since a 1-1 draw against
Russia last March in Moscow. The team's last game with its full World
Cup squad was last October, against Venezuela in the South American
World Cup qualifying.
Brazil will debut in Group F against Croatia on June 13 in Berlin. It
will then play Australia on June 18 and Japan on June 22.
