The team returned to training with
news on the medical front. Helguera, Ramos and Roberto Carlos didn't
step on the pitch, while Emerson, Cannavaro, Ronaldo and Casillas were
unable to see the session through. Roberto Carlos joins the medical
report with a talalgia on his left foot. The rest will return to work in
the next session.
The squad returned to training after two days' rest. As has become usual
when they are given a couple of days off, Capello welcomed them back
with a very tough session that focused mainly on hard physical workouts.
The session reached its hardest point half way through when the players
were told to run diagonally, covering the entire training pitch. A good
look at them and one could easily see they were exhausted. Fabio Capello
wants his men to be in shape and physical trainers Massimo Neri and
Santiago Lozano are keeping them that way.
Every player stepped on the pitch at Valdebebas at 11:30 am except for
Helguera, Roberto Carlos and Ramos. The former still hasn't recovered
from his bruised right quadriceps and is unfit to train, Roberto has a
telalgia on his left foot and Ramos worked out in the gym. The first 30
minutes of the session covered a technical lecture indoors, after which
they all went out and started warming up, doing stretching exercises and
jogging lightly round the pitch.
Ball work and physical exercises
Prior to starting with the physical workouts, Capello made his
players play piggy-in-the-middle in two groups. Later, Massimo Neri and
Santiago Lozano took the reins of the session and made them sprint
diagonally accross the pitch while they recovered their breath by
jogging along the sides until they reached the next corner.
Every player wore a personal heart rate monitor so that the medical
staff could keep tabs on their heart. Emerson didn't participate in this
exercise and left the session early. Capello's men looked more and more
tired as minutes went by and Ronaldo started feeling some pain in his
right leg. After being checked by the physiotherapists he too left early.
The sprinting series lasted 20 minutes, after which Cannavro also
retired. Nearly two hours after this morning's session had begun, the
remaining players divided into two teams of nine to play a practice
match in which Diego López was badly hit and had the medical staff
worried for a while, but they eventually saw there was nothing serious
to worry about. Reyes was the most inspired player and scored three
Mild session for Casillas
Iker didn't work out as intensely as Diego López and Adán. His
training consisted on a continuous mild jog with Nieto prior to leaving
the pitch before the practice game. There are four training sessions
left before the team travel to Barcelona to face Espanyol. In the next
few days, Fabio Capello will recover his injured players little by
little for the penultimate League match before the Christmas break.
