After a five-game winless streak, the Corinthians returned to win on
Saturday, beating Gremio 2-1 in the Brazilian soccer championship.
Ronaldo scored the game's first goal in the 11th minute. Receiving the ball
on the left side, the star striker sized up the Gremio goalkeeper and
crushed it from long distance. The ball deflected off a Gremio defender and
veered into the right corner of the Gremio net.
Ronaldo would later participate in his team's second goal. In the 33rd
minute, he dropped the ball off to a streaking Elias in front of the Gremio
goal. Elias blasted the ball, not allowing anychance for the Gremio goalie
to react.
Gremio cut down on the Corinthians' lead in the 69th minute. Tcheco sent a
corner kick to the front of the net where he found Rever cutting through the
defense to head the ball into the net.
Corinthians' victory caused the team to jump five spots. With 42 points, the
team stands in 7th place. However, the standing is subject to change
depending on Monday's matches that bring a close to the 29th round of play
in the championship.
Gremio dropped one place to 8th with 41 points. |
